Rowell Guevarra
In June of 1976, Rowell was born in Torrance, California. He grew up near the beach and loved spending time outside. Rowell would often go camping with his family when he was young.
He spent many days spearfishing off the shore of the Pacific Ocean during his senior year in high school. On Valentine's Day 1995, Rowell enlisted in the Army as an Airborne Infantryman. His love of the outdoors has been cultivated by the Army throughout his career.
He married LaRee’ Goins of Bakersfield, CA. They have three children, Brayden, Thalia and Ben. The two younger children live at home in Smiths Station, AL. Brayden currently serves as a Lieutenant in the Space Force.
Rowell has served in various light, airborne and mechanized units and has held the positions of RTO, Scout, Scout Squad Leader, Rifle Squad Leader, Weapons Squad Leader, Rifle Platoon Sergeant, Master Trainer and Company First Sergeant. He has deployed five times with V Corps Long Range Surveillance and Reconnaissance, twice with the 82nd Airborne Division, and once with the 3rd Infantry Division over the course of his career. Rowell is a graduate of Ranger School, Jumpmaster School, and Airborne School. His awards include Fort Benning Instructor of the Year, Bronze Star, Expert Infantry Badge and Combat Infantry Badge. After retirement, Rowell continues his service as a Defense Contractor working as a Capability Developer for night vision devices.
In September of 2019, Rowell was introduced to fly fishing through PHWFF. Fly fishing quickly became apparent to him as a therapeutic activity. Rowell put in a lot of time on casting and was soon double hauling after only a few months. He is an active participant and volunteers managing the Auburn Program’s social media presence.
For him, fly fishing has evolved into more than a pastime. He's taught his family about the culture. He also serves on the board of the OARS Foundation, and he recently formed Alabama's first Mayfly Project, which uses fly fishing to help foster children.
